How Did I Get Here?
What better place to start than at the beginning...I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself and how I ended up as a copywriter. I like to think it's a fun story (but I may be biased), so if you’d like to know how I got here, read on…
I have been a small business owner in some form since 2003, and a work-at-home mom since 2010.
I was DOING ALL THE THINGS! For my business, and my family.
Marketing. Production.
Copywriting.
Website creation.
24/7 child care.
Cooking 351 meals and snacks a week.
Customer service (kids AND clients).
Networking.
Laundry.
Packaging.
Bookkeeping.
Housekeeping.
Outreach.
Gardening.
Social Media Management.
Pet-wrangling.
Fire extinguishing - there always seemed to be a fire somewhere.
Notice how “sleep” was not mentioned above. Ahem.
I was doing it all, but I wasn’t doing any of it well.
Sadly, my business took too much of my time and energy. Without knowing where to get the help and support I needed, eventually I stopped accepting new clients and shut down production.
But, I carried on!
Mostly, I was a SAHM, who occasionally saw clients or filled a custom order. We even added upwards of 25 hours per week of therapies to address my kids’ special needs. Life. Was. Full.
Then, COVID hit.
For the first time in years, I had time to sit and breathe. I was able to take a look at what was (and was not!) working in my life.
I did some reflection on my strengths, thought a lot about what I liked with respect to my previous businesses, and made a plan forward.
Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I loved doing copy for my business. Creating web pages, coming up with fun product descriptions, crafting entertaining emails - THAT was the stuff that fulfilled me.
I did some research, took some classes, read about 104 books on marketing, and created my portfolio website. Finally, I started reaching out to business owners in need of my help.
I understand how it feels to want to be everything for your family and your business. But I also know that it’s impossible to do.
You started your business because you had an idea to share. The world needs you and your unique perspective! Don’t let the minutiae of being a business owner hold you back!
In this space, I’ll be sharing copy tricks and tips to help your business grow, things that motivate me (anyone love a good book review, because I love to read!), and reviews of copy I am wild about so that you can get an idea how I work to create copy that is clear, compelling, conversational, and that converts to sales.
So glad you have joined me here, and I look forward to connecting with you and helping you reach your business goals.
Next week, I’ll go in depth about how I dialed in my copywriting skills, and tell you a bit more about the amazing program that helped re-launch my business...stay tuned!
